Sightseeing in Bergen, Norway

Bergen is popular city in Norway and the visitors don't miss to visit here. You may spend time from half day until 2 days, depends on time. Bergen rains almost everyday. Fortunately, it rains a little in the evening on the day I visited. Bergen is one destination when the foreigners visit the fjord. The bus and trams are the public transport in Bergen but I decided to walk. The bus or tram fare is expensive and the distance between each sightseeing place is not too far. The various sightseeing places are as follows:

Bryggen

You may ever see the photo of the colorful houses from TV or books. This area is Bryggen and is one of the world heritage. There are souvenir shops open 10:00 or 11:00, I cannot remember the exact time. I visited there early in the morning so the shops are not open yet. If you take the bus from airport, get off the last stop or if you walk from Bergen Train Station, it takes 15-20 minutes. Bryggen is near fishmarket. No entrance fee.

Fish Market

I visited Norway in winter so most of the shops are close. Actually, there are indoor and outdoor market.  I hear that food of the indoor market is cheaper than the outdoor. I went here early in the morning so the shops are not open yet. In summer there are more food stalls especially the outdoor market.

Mount Floyen (Fløibanen)

You can buy the ticket online in advance or on the day you visited. Someday the queue is long so advance ticket may be better. I bought the ticket at the counter because I concerned about the weather (rainy day or not). Luckily, the queue was short. The visitors like to sit on the first row on the tram.

I bought the round trip ticket. On the way to the top, there are 2-3 stops so you can get off any stop. I really like the scenery here especially on sunny day. There are free toilets and souvenir shop.

Byparken and Festplassen

I like the this fantastic view here. Normally, the tourists visit here in summer but I also recommend visiting in winter. It is not crowd and also has beautiful view. Just 5 minutes from Bergen Station. You can walk from Bergen Station or the take the bus. The bus stop is in front of the park.

Torgallmenningen

Here is shopping centre. There are brand name shops, convenience stores, cafe, restaurants. I went to McDonald's and tries some Filet-O-Fish and hot chocolate and the taste was nice. Normally, McDonald's in Europe, I rarely see the ketchup sauce for hamburger available for the customer. In Norway if you take here (in cafe), you can add ketchup sauce as you like (same as in Thailand). The price seems reasonable comparing the cost of living.

Bergenhus Fortress

Bergenhus Fortress or Bergenhus Festning is short walk from Bryggen. Free entrance except the museum. It is peaceful here.  I looked around and took some photo. For your information, there are free toilets.
